Remote Working in the Triangle: September Newsletter πŸ’»

Happy September, co-remote workers of the Triangle!

By now we're seeing college students pour back into the Triangle, and with temperatures dipping to merely the mid-80s most days now, I'm gearing up into full Mr. Autumn Man mode, ready to start hitting some nice outdoor coffee shops and restaurants to work from.

If you too are looking for some new venues to try, you should check out this awesome spreadsheet put together by our awesome organizer Melody Jaros. In it, you'll find different tabs for different parts of the Triangle, each with a list of venues you can work from, along with other crucial details like seating situation, WiFi strength and password, and other various notes. This is constant work in progress, so if you have any good venue recommendations, shout them out in our Slack community, and we can add to the spreadsheet. And hat tip to Melody for putting this together!

What we're up to

In response to numerous requests for more evening events, last month we held our first pub crawl, in which about 20 of us wound our way through several different bars in Downtown Cary. It was a great way to unwind with fellow remote workers after being cooped up at home all week. And we had so much fun, we're planning to do another one through downtown Durham later this month! (See event listing here)

Also, thank you to those who've reached out with interest in speaking at events. As I've said in recent newsletters, we'd like to start putting some "value-add" to some of our events. Evening drinks are great, but they can be even better with speakers on topics relevant to remote workers and digital nomads to enlighten us and provide conversation fodder. So if you have any interest in speaking, running a workshop or hosting any other sort of event relevant to members of this group, please get in touch! Parameters on topics are pretty wide, so whatever you've got in mind, fire it our way.

Our upcoming events

Reminder that these are only the events already confirmed, and they are subject to change. We often post new events less than a week ahead of time, so be sure to follow us on Meetup to stay up on them as they're posted or adjusted. If you're interested in becoming an event host or joining our leadership team in another context, please get in touch!

Venue Spotlight: Boba-N-Chai in Cary

For those with a sweet tooth, Boba-N-Chai is a nice quiet place to spend an afternoon remote working. With a huge selection of East Asian and Indian style treats, you can choose from bobas, milk teas, slushys, chais, ice cream, tarts and dozens of other drinks and deserts. There's usually plenty of seating, so grab your laptop and indulge a bit. (See website)

PS - Here are a few more resources I've found useful as a 'digital semi-nomad':

Safety Wing - Short-term travel health insurance that covers you pretty much anywhere in the world and is easy to sign up for.

Hostelworld - For finding fun, social places to stay while traveling, and has reliable reviews (and there are many hostels listed with private rooms).

Couchsurfing - With this app you can find FREE places to crash while traveling, and usually with pretty cool local hosts. But if that's not your scene, they also have a "hangout" function, where at any given time, you can see who else is nearby wanting to meet up with other travelers to sight-see, grab coffee, go out and party, etc.

Triangle Remote is a labor of love, but unfortunately, love doesn't pay the bills associated with maintaining the group and its associated platforms. We're committed to never charging dues, but voluntary donations do go a long way to making this endeavor sustainable. So if you've gained something from our group, whether it be insights from this newsletter, fun times at our events, or connections on our Slack community, please consider making a small donation via credit card, PayPal or Venmo

Happy June, co-remote workers of the Triangle! Hope you're all enjoying what's probably those last few weeks where it's pleasant to do some outdoor remote working before it gets brutally hot. If you're ever in the market for some new coffee shops to try out, you can always check out our spreadsheet of good remote work spots around the Triangle. Some of my personal favorite venues with outdoor seating are Namu, Guglhupf, Caffe Driade and Duke University. Just a few bits of news from us this...

Happy May, co-remote workers of the Triangle! And hello after a bit of a hiatus from this newsletter. I hope you've all been enjoying the separate Thrive Remotely newsletter put out every week by our parent group, with all sorts of resources and musings on how to thrive in your life as a remote professional. This Triangle-specific newsletter will be a bit less frequent as we put more time into that one, but we'll still pop in regularly with news, events and anything else relevant to remote...
